WHAT IS A SUMP PUMP?

A sump pump is a device designed to pump sewage up an incline and into the septic tank. They are used in areas where the septic tank is located at a higher elevation than the house, or when the pipe must travel over a hill to get to it. A sump pump is pretty much the only way for a septic tank configuration like this to work.

A septic tank system operates the same way that most plumbing does. Waste is flushed out of the home’s sewer line and flows down into the tank to be stored until it can be collected and removed. If the septic tank is at a higher elevation than the house, however, it cannot rely on gravity to feed the sewage into it. Attempting to use it anyway will result in sewage backing up in your pipes, causing ruptures and contaminating the rest of your plumbing.
